Social Media & Public Relations

When it comes to social media relating to public relations there is such a wide variety of what can be done. Some companies use social media to see how many fans will follow them, but as a PR major I understand that social media has a far bigger spectrum than just fans following. For a paper that I wrote for class I studied the Johnson and Johnson Camp Baby campaign. With this event taking place in March of 2008, social media was not used as often for companies, but when researching further Johnson & Johnson campaigns they have used more media outlets such as youtube, and moms and children blogsites. All in all social media is a wonderful thing in the PR industry if you use it to the best of the sites ability.

  1. Social media is becoming more and more invested in PR as its benefits are immediately apparent. It is both a tool for measurement and communication, but too often nowadays, it comprises the entire PR campaign as opposed to older forms of PR initatives (like traditional media outreach, pitching, etc...) A lot of brands have defaulted to Social Media stunts to get press; it leads me to believe that calling up a reporter will soon be a thing of the past.

Still, social media is a frontier that a lot of brands take advantage of and as a consumer, I would be lying to say that I have not...say, followed a brand on Twitter or liked them on Facebook. It can be used properly, but mistaken tweets or poor communication has shown to be a detriment to many people's digital following.

  2. I agree with Alex, I think that social media is leaving journalism, in the traditional sense in the dust. Nobody calls up journalists anymore, they email, tweet, Direct Message or text them. That being said, I am a fan of traditional media. Especially now, when everyone is so social media concious, picking up a phone and having a person to person conversation with someone will leave a lasting impact.

  3. It's so true that so social media is becoming a huge part in public relations. It's crazy to think that only a few years ago social media was a new idea in the industry. I am really curious to see where we will be in another few years.

  4. I think social media is just an addition to the traditional media practices that we know as practitioners. A PR campaign would not be complete if it didn't include both traditional and new media. As Megan mentioned, this will help make a stronger impact for the public.

  6. Social Media is now becoming one of the most popular tools in social media - if its used correctly. Often times companies start facebook fan pages or twitter accounts and dont neccessarily see the potential influence it could have on consumers so they keep active with it. If used correctly companies can give the exact message they want to send directly to the most important listerns - their customers. The more active and responsive the site is the better the outcome will be for the company.
